In the decade project, students were given a decade of their choice, some did recent decades (70's, 80's) while I took a blast from the past. My decade was in the distant past, when America was still a child and starting to develop. In the 1790's, America was vastly different than how we see it today, everything was more formal, slavery was still in effect, and quality of life was less advanced. The 1790's may seem boring, but the work sample was loaded with information about back then.
i chose to present this assignment on my portfolio because it was probably the hardest and most postponed work sample in my portfolio. This work sample, unlike ones in Geo and Chem, were more project based and underlines a 21st century skill more effectively. After months of work and rehearsing, I finally got this bad baby done. The grade wasn't the greatest you could get (92% A), but it's still great overall. Information was scarce, but i'm pretty proud of what I come up with for my decade.
The 21st century skill which was involved in this work sample is Business Literacy and Economics because in this work sample, I got to learn partially about America's economy back then. Economy relied on growing crops and trading them, with large trade centers being in the cities. (Beverages like Peach Brandy were at an all time high, and locally grown vegetables were too.) For example, Philadelphia and New York were large trade centers in America in the 1790's. Money was more valuable back then, since 6 cents back then caused a whole outrage in Nerville House and Bower Hill. Therefore, learning about the economy back then supports said 21st century skill.
If I had to do this work sample again, I would choose a decade that was much more recent than the 1790, maybe I would choose the 1910's instead because was closer to World War I and during the Silent Generation. While there were months of preparation ahead of us, I still wouldn't procrastinate. Finally, in the presentation, I could've owned it a little more and spoke a little louder for people to hear me better. Even though I had a lot of room of improvement, I still tried my best on this assignment and looking forward to seeing more in the future.
This work sample demonstrates growth by the creative slide choice, effective time management, and fair presentation skills. I found the slide template on SlidesGo and the slides seem very classy and professional. I did not procrastinate, since I got this whole slideshow ready in less than a month, and being able to own it and not having to read off a script. I do get stuck at times but I don't lose my train of thought entirely. Therefore, I have done a decent job in this work sample but at the same time, there's still room for improvement.
