The Hawaiian Heroes Project is a 5-part project about Hawaiian heroes (and anti-heroes) on researching their role in significance in the development of Hawaiian Culture. We originally did a quiz show and stated facts about our hero. Then we wrote an argumentative essay, drew a portrait, a journal entry, and finally we are doing a debate on which hero is better. My hero is the infamous Captain Cook, a naval officer who traveled the sea and struck deals in the Pacific Islandry.
I presented this work sample because it represents one or more of the 21st century skills. More specifically the Information Skills because in order to pass this project and the course, you need to do research on your hero and study for the final debate. This also involves Communication skills as observed in the quiz show and the final debate which also involves oral communication. This can also be related to Global Awareness because each hero had a culture which was akin to modern Hawaiian culture and how they had a role on affecting it. Therefore, I chose this set of work samples to my portfolio because It displayed a variety of 21st century skills which are needed for a successful portfolio.
I chose this project because it was a large portion of the Hawaiian History class. This project is also worthy of being in my portfolio due to its large amount of points and its fun voting system. This project also takes effective research for the final debates and knock-out rounds. The heroes in general had interesting lives in general with some actions being beneficial to Hawaiian culture and others not so much. Even though this project took a hefty amount of work, this will all be worth it when presented in my portfolio.
This project can demonstrate my current growth by finding sources, orally presenting, and expertise in art. Some challenges I had to face were finding Captain Cook's actions that were actually beneficial to the community since he died without favor from the native Hawaiians. This challenge has been overcome because there were sources and presentations which helped me determine the positives and negatives of Cook's actions. This showcased my natural and normal ability to research and ability to present without looking at much information.
Potential Opportunities I could've done was to obviously be more devoted to this work sample and research more because I have gotten stumped on things like the Quiz Show where I was up against my friend Ashlyn and in the final debate where I was up against Kai. To be honest, another way I could have improved is finding a hero which really had an impact on Hawaiian culture and society. Therefore, I have chose this work sample not only because it was a great deal of points, but it involved research much akin to the bill project and oral presentations.
