Branden Hazlet, Climate Literacy Project which includes subject groups from Humanities (Adam Fleischer), Art (Maile Getzen, Algebra (Jeanie Stewart), and Biology (Amanda Wilson)*
The exhibition includes the Climate Literacy Project, this involves 3-4 students actively collaborating using Weebly, a website creator. This integrated project requires climate change work samples from all courses which includes a drawdown solution, a letter to earth, an analysis for CO2 PPM, a comparison between conventional and inexhaustible energy, and an art gallery. As such, this is essentially a final for the climate change unit which involves all classes working together as a team to battle climate change and make a difference in our community.
Our goal for this project was initially to create a Mind Map of some sort. This Mind Map took the place of a google form and described what your solution was, the carbon sequestered, among other factors as well. Another goal we had to endure was to create a website regarding the information about the proposed solution. Furthermore, this solution required professional help from experts at leeward haleakala watershed foundation, giving us feedback and takeaways we can put on our posters, yet again, among other factors. We know this has fulfilled our satisfaction if it caused change in part of our community and all posts have been completed. Therefore, our goal was to make a mind map, email a professional, come up with a solution to create change or intangible or tangible items which create change in the environment.
This climate literacy project is essentially multiple work samples. As a result, it obviously shows more than one 21st century skill. For instance, this video involves Communication Skills because it is an oral presentation of the Climate Literacy project. Since climate change is a global issue, this project displays Global Awareness because we are aware of the upcoming crisis and take preliminary action to affect our communities. Speaking of communities, this ties in to Civic Literacy and Engagement because at the end of the day, this project has changed our lives and affected the community in some sort of way. In addition, this project could not have been accomplished if it wasn't for my team members, which displays Interpersonal Skills as we worked on this website as a coordinated effort. These facts could've have come from our brains alone, we had to use the world wide web to research facts and ideas about Forest protection, which is Information skills. This project was especially hard to approach because there was little information regarding on what we could do to help stop deforestation. There are also county rules we have to be aware of and because of the pandemic, most reservations have cut off service work. Therefore, this project stands out from all the other work samples by far because it displays a plethora of 21st century skills.
What I could've improved on in this Climate Literacy project from day one is I could've found a group which was more interesting and devoted to this exhibition assessment. This is an integrated project after all and should be treated as such. What I could've done on a personal level was to not waste time, and to find a better solution which was more worthy for this Climate Literacy project. We are aware about the situation and I would love to become an activist and actively help the environment. What I also could've done was ask better questions to the experts, questions which can only be answered by them in order to get enough information to devise the long shot plan to help the environment. Therefore, this project could've been greatly expanded on, we just didn't devote ourselves enough.
What we did do best was be able to somewhat work as a team and get progress done and what we got out of this is being able to exit our comfort zone and the beginning of our journey to becoming activists in the future. This also allows me to evaluate with organizations which are already doing their part so they can let us know what we can do. We also knew from the get-go what actions we could do to help reforestation. However, we needed to get consent in order to do so, which is a challenge. Even though we had hurdles every now and then such as incorrect information on posters and better questions, the beneficial aspects outweigh our detrimental challenges we faced.
TAKEAWAYS***: Even though our project didn't live up to its true glory, as with the other ones, we have come up with a feasible solution AND be in touch with experts starting our climate literacy career for the future.
