These projects were for my Computer Science, now Engineering Design class. These projects involved creating a self supporting structure model and a choice project. My choice project was a vending machine which sold chicken for a nickel. This project took simple materials like cardboard, and utility tools such as a hot glue gun. We also cant forget these projects are Interesting, doable and safe with adult supervision.
I chose these work samples to be in my last 9th grade portfolio because they definately represented a 21st century skill by pushing me out of my comfort zone and looking for materials. This however, is different from the previous work samples. The skills involved in these projects are Thinking and Problem solving skills, and Self-Directional Skills. I used Thinking and Problem solving skills because there were many things which went wrong in my project and found solutions to fix such problems. Another thing to keep in mind was there were goals like halfway and finishing touches when finishing your project. Therefore, this project was fit enough to be in my final 9th grade portfolio because it displayed a variety of 21st century skills.
I chose this project in general because it was one of a rare opportunities to do hands on assessments with milestones and slideshows at the end, documenting your progress as you continue to move forward. This project vastly differs from all the other 7 work samples on my portfolio because it engages in using real life materials to increase your expertise of creativity and creating things in general rather than online assessments or worksheets to fill out. This project is also interesting which catches your eye, doable, which means you have access to the materials and have the knowledge to create it, and safety where the workspace is safe and supervised at all times. Therefore, I chose this work sample because its vastly different from the others and has 3 different elements not introduced in other subjects.
Something I could've improved upon during this project was using different materials and being more precise with my measurements when I was creating both projects. Instead of diversifying from my vending machine project, I could've followed direct directions to make a more functioning vending machine. I could've also used simpler materials and created new braces rather than a holder. I could've also been more time friendly and work on this project more to make it have better quality. All in all, I could've found opportunities for new growth by using better materials, being more accurate with my measurements. following the instructibles directons, and spending more time on it.
What I did do well on this project was make the tallest treehouse and a record holder for legs at 8 legs. This can demonstrate my current growth by being able to create 2 projects in a 4 week time frame, 1 project for every 2 weeks. This also set up my ability to finish mini dead-lines before the final product arises. This also sparked ideas in my brain and the ability to problem solve when things go wrong and it seems its not successful. I also used terminology like effectiveness, stability, and clarity which means how effective my project can maneuver an accessory, the stability of the framework, and how the entire project looks based on appearance. Taking everything into consideration, I displayed this work sample because it was interesting, doable, and safe. Also, this work sample is different from the others by a long shot and had its own challenges in its own right.
