Description of Work/Assignment: This essay puts 20 hours of research before we put pen into paper. Each student had to focus on one topic, make a strong thesis and a compelling antithesis, and make use of the information sandwich and all necessary in-text citations. This is the "final exam" for English 100, and the word count should surpass 3,000 words for the essay alone, not including the works cited page.
Which 21st Century Skill do you feel this assignment addresses, and why?
This work sample takes on Thinking and Problem Solving Skills because the use of literary analysis is evident; pairs of trained eyes (myself included) found instances of broken grammar laws, for instance the FANBOYS rule and run-on sentences, but good writers can easily bend the rules and make it work.
What are you most proud of from this assignment, and why?
Something I am proud of from this assignment is me being able to properly use the thesis, as that has been docking me points from the first four essays in English 100. The process was worth it because I have received an A on this essay; I have not spent my hours for nothing. The new challenge I took on begets the fruits I have earned from this experience.
How did you develop and/or improve upon your 21st Century Skill with this assignment?
I made my body paragraphs consistent with the thesis with careful revision, and had in-class activities where Professor Andaluz pairs us into groups, where we make our own information sandwiches. We can analyze the anatomy of an information sandwich paragraph together, and integrate our findings into the final paper.
What was most difficult about completing this task?
What is most difficult about completing this task was finding the time to do the 20 hours. It may have been cumulative, but I felt like I wasn't getting enough information for the ideas to flow. I also had a tough time following grammar rules at the time. I also needed to use the college library more, but using keywords to find specific sources was difficult.
How could you improve this work? If you could start over, what would you do different?
If I could start over, I would swallow my pride and run it by more than one person. The tutor may have been helpful, but her feedback was more like nitpicking according to her word. I would also get Grammarly Premium because I wrote the essay with a limited free plan.
How does this relate to what you have learned in the past?
This assignment takes what I have learned in the past and multiplies it ten-fold; I have researched debatable and sometimes controversial topics for essays, but it wasn't as easy as taking a nap. This work sample requires the use of the CRAAP test in the college library for source credibility because things may slip through the cracks.
How can you apply this to future learning?
The nature of this assignment can be applied to anything writing intensive. For instance, the English 104 poems, or the History 151 Socratic Seminar reflections. This assignment had the greatest legacy of all; its significance was etched into my writers voice forever and made writing way easier looking forward.
