This is my final biology project for Quarter 3. This involves a species which was affected by adaptive radiation, its current food and habitat, and its ancestry and how it connects to similar species descending from the same ancestor. My species is a Woodpecker Finch which descended from Volatinia Jacarina (blue-black grassquit). The common ancestor descended to 14 new species and today these finches are threatened and are kept in an undisclosed location. This project requires an online poster and a detailed research paper with examples of adaptive radiation and your very own phylogenetic tree.
This work sample can represent a 21st century skill by using Information Skills and Communication Skills like the Hawaiian Heroes project but on a different topic. This project requires you to be specific about your research as I have received many comments from my biology teacher to be more specific when I initially started. This project also uses APA rather than MLA which teaches you how to cite sources in different formats. Also, this work sample requires you to orally present to get a final grade for the class. Therefore, I chose this work sample because it displays some variations of the 21st century skills.
I chose this assessment to be in my portfolio because for one it as a tough final assessment which got some other students my age confused and struggled on it for a while. This project is also not friendly with time, having to complete 3 paragraphs in a short timeframe and required specification. My teacher has left comments on this work sample which led me to be more specific about facts about my creature. The sources about this creature were very scarce which means it was very challenging nonetheless. However, I got over it and created a Canva document which looked like a newsletter of some sort. My teacher also helped me create a template for the newsletter. Therefore, I chose this project because it was exceptionally challenging and had and exceptionable amount of points and a strict grading rubric.
Something I could've improved on was be more specific from the get-go and most likely in my last 3 paragraphs which comes out to 6 total paragraphs. Another thing I could've improved on was creating APA in-text citations to be more specific where the data comes from. I could also find better information, instead of directly searching for woodpecker finches, I could've searched for darwin finch articles because woodpecker finch descends from such. In addition I could've had a better Canva design by creating dividers like most newsletters had and even key facts and vocabulary words. All in all, I had much to improve when it came to this work sample.
This can demonstrate my current growth by being able to write a 6 paragraph paper with over a 1000 words, my ability to specify these comments, what they mean, and how to fix my mistakes, and my new knowledge of Canva and asking for help if needed. This demonstrates my current growth by being able to cope with mini deadlines and time constraints while also having other work and extracurriculars in place. Therefore, I chose this work sample to present to my final 9th grade portfolio because it was challenging, showed my abilities, opened new doors for improvement, and ability to work new softwares.
